Moto Accommo

Have a look over some of the places I've stayed over the years here in Australia, some good and some bad!

You'll learn what towns have 'Motorcycle Friendly' accommodation, are priced right relative to value, and some to just plain stay away from!

Almost every trip to, or through Tumbarumba, I hear syncopated rhythms inside my helmet going something like this... 'tum um bar-umba, tum um barrrr-umba' kinda inspires you to stop, get off and do the Samba... however I find I tend to get too many strange looks to make a habit of it! So yet again I save myself for 'So You Think You can Dance!

Note to self: load new music in my Nokia one of these days!

Well in Tumbarumba you're in logging country and on the verge of 'The Man From Snowy River' stomping grounds. It's a great place to layover on your way in, or out of the Snowy Mountains. Today I'm meeting Peter and Thao of www.wheezyrider.com fame to ride the road from Tumut along the Snowy Mountains Highway to Cooma then up and over Brown Mountain to the coast for a meal in Merimbula, NSW before heading north to follow wherever our collective noses bring us.

If you've been following my various blogs you will recall that Peter Sever (AKA WheezyRider) contacted me while riding through Nam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand looking for info on what to do and see in Australia as their arrival was looming. Their ETA at the time was January, so my advice was 'upon arriving in Darwin get a motel room, lock the door, turn the air conditioner on, and sleep til April'!  Unfortunately for them they were getting down to the last leg of their 2 year, 80,000 KM, 40 Country trip and had to make up some time so straight down the centre they went.

I gave Peter a blow by blow itinerary of what in essence, was an early draft of my soon to be released 'Two Wheel Touring Ride Guide 'Shooting The Centre'. They hit Australia armed with things to see, eat, and where to stay on the road from Darwin to Adelaide then around the coast up to Sydney. They evidently loved the suggestions as Peter has been raving about it on his own blog.

Last night I stayed in the Tumbarumba Motel as I often do when passing through this part of the world (for more info go to Tumbarumba Motel). The rooms are clean, modern, and the bed is just right for my 50 plus year old back!  Being a light sleeper I often find I'm sticking my riding ear plugs in during the night at some motels, but not so at The Tumbarumba Motel.  It is quiet and comfortable and I woke this morning charged, fresh and ready to go for another days ride.

Robyn is the host and she says they encourage Motorcyclists to stay with them by offering secure lock up parking, or you can park right in front of your room under the awning. No need to go to extreme's such as running a string through the window and tying one end to the bike and the other around your big toe here in Tumbarumba, the town is a pleasant place and feels like there are not a lot of problems here.  Robyn also says you can lock and leave your bike to go exploring by other means (walking, canoeing, 4WD, tour bus etc) knowing it is safe and sound behind locked gates. She says you can pick it up at the end of your excursion and head off to your next over night as well, no need to stay in the motel another night just to keep your bike safe while you are out playing.

I had dinner in one of the local pubs last night which was as, local pub fare often are... well put it this way, thank goodness they had wine. I enjoyed a fantastic breakfast at 4 Bears Cafe (see photo) which could be called 4000 Bears Cafe (see photo below). Go to www.4bearscafe.com.au. service was great and so was the Coffee.

Fortified, well rested and ready to go I'm off to Tumut to meet Wheezy Rider.
I'll load some more pics of interesting little Tumbarumba when I get back to Bowral.
